What’s inside the Gabriel 2018 catalog
Think of it as Gabriel’s U.S. ride-control application bible for street machines and light trucks. Typical coverage on each vehicle sheet:
- Front struts / cartridges — Gabriel strut assemblies and cartridge applications where listed
- Rear shocks (hydraulic) — gas-charged twin-tube and related Guardian / Ultra / ProGuard-style replacements
- Air shocks / load-assist — air-adjustable rear dampers (Hijackers / Load Carrier family and siblings) for towing and sagging rears
- ReadyMount / complete corner units — when Gabriel offers a strut + mount assembly for the platform
- Notes — 2WD vs 4WD, spring type, electronic-suspension exclusions, “air shock available,” qty per axle
Like Moog and KYB, Gabriel sheets almost never list a single model year alone. You’ll see stacked year ranges with leftover trim notes. If the book lists both a hydraulic rear shock and an air-adjustable option for the same truck, they are different jobs—not two part numbers for the same ride.
Air shocks: how they work (and what they are not)
A Gabriel air shock (load-assist / air-adjustable) is still a hydraulic damper—but it adds an air sleeve or chamber you can pressurize with a Schrader valve (or a small onboard compressor kit). Air pressure raises the effective spring rate at that corner so the rear doesn’t squat under a load. Bleed the air down and the truck sits closer to unloaded ride height.
What air shocks are good for:
- Towing — trailers that plant tongue weight on the hitch and flatten the rear springs
- Sagging rear — worn coils/leaves plus a camper shell, toolbox, or permanent cargo
- RV / trailer tongue weight — weekend warriors who need height when hitched and a normal stance when empty
- Light trucks & vans — half-tons and vans that see intermittent overload but aren’t full commercial chassis (those often belong in the Gabriel Heavy Duty catalog)
What air shocks are not: they are not a full air-spring suspension (no primary air bags replacing the coil/leaf), not a lift kit, and not a substitute for a broken spring. If the rear spring is dead, replace the spring—then decide whether you still want load-assist damping. Over-inflating an air shock to “fix” a collapsed coil will cook the damper and still leave you with bad geometry.
Reading Gabriel air-shock lines vs hydraulic
Left to right, a typical Gabriel application line looks like other ride-control books:
- Year range — stacked newest-first. If your year sits inside the range, that SKU applies unless a note says otherwise.
- Position — Front / Rear, Left / Right when they differ, or “Rear (2)” when both sides share a number
- Product line / part number — hydraulic line name + SKU, or an air-adjustable / load-assist callout with its own SKU
- Qty & notes — pieces per vehicle, exclusions, “with air shocks,” mounting eye size, or electronic-suspension exceptions
Bay quick-reference:
- Hydraulic Gabriel (Guardian / Ultra / ProGuard and kin) — fixed-rate damping for daily driving. No Schrader valve. Match the catalog line to the ride you want; don’t mix left Ultra with right Guardian unless you have a reason.
- Air / load-assist lines (Hijackers, Load Carrier, and related) — rear-biased applications with an inflation valve. Same mounting points as many hydraulic rears on that truck, but the part number and the job are different. Confirm eye/bushing size and compressed length—air bodies can be bulkier.
- ReadyMount / complete struts — strut + mount (and often spring hardware) as a corner unit when Gabriel catalogs the platform. Check whether the spring is included before you tear the old corner apart.
When both a hydraulic rear and an air-adjustable rear appear on the same sheet, ask the customer: Do you tow or haul enough to need adjustable height? If yes, air. If they just want a firm daily ride with no compressor hose in the fender well, stick with hydraulic—and look at KYB Gas-a-just as another firm option when that book lists the vehicle.
Regular Gabriel shocks & struts (brief but real)
This book is still a full shocks-and-struts catalog, not an air-shock pamphlet. Most rows are ordinary hydraulic replacements: fronts as struts or cartridges, rears as twin-tube gas shocks. Use the same discipline you use on KYB—read the year range, the 2WD/4WD note, and any “except electronic” callout. Electronic / adaptive suspensions are usually excluded; buying a passive Gabriel for a MagneRide corner is a parts-runner trip you don’t need.
Cross-check heavy RV, bus, and commercial chassis in the Gabriel Heavy Duty Catalog—that book is the fleet/HD sibling, not a duplicate of this 2018 passenger/light-truck book.
