What’s inside the Gabriel Heavy Duty book
Think of it as Gabriel’s commercial / fleet application bible. Typical coverage:
- Heavy-duty and fleet shocks — valving and bodies built for higher GVWR, longer duty cycles, and constant payload
- Light truck / van / cutaway applications — work trucks, cargo vans, and chassis-cabs that live past the consumer book’s comfort zone
- RV and trailer-related chassis — motorhome and commercial-coach corners where passenger Gabriel SKUs are wrong or underspec’d
- Bus and commercial notes — where Gabriel catalogs them; always confirm axle rating and mounting eye before ordering
- Cross-reference / application rows — year ranges, positions, and HD line callouts separate from the 2018 street book
The Catalogs hub blurb says it plainly: everything you need for RVs, heavy-duty trucks, and commercial applications. If the vehicle is a daily half-ton with a weekend trailer, start in the Gabriel Shocks and Struts (2018) guide—including air shocks. If it is a fleet van, cutaway, motorhome, or bus-adjacent chassis, open this book first.
How this differs from the consumer Gabriel book
Same brand, different job:
- Coverage set — 2018 book = cars, light trucks, SUVs, and the air-adjustable / load-assist rows that matter for towing hobbyists. HD book = fleet, commercial, RV, and heavier light-truck / van applications.
- Valving & durability — HD dampers are calibrated for sustained load, heat, and mileage. A consumer Ultra that feels great on an empty F-150 can fade or bottom on a loaded cutaway that never sees empty.
- Mounting & body size — eye IDs, bushing widths, and body diameters often differ from the street SKU even when the truck “looks the same” in the lot. Never assume a 2018 passenger number carries over because the badge says Gabriel.
- Air shocks — load-assist air shocks for light trucks live primarily in the 2018 book guide. HD may list commercial leveling solutions, but do not mix a Hijackers-style passenger air shock onto a motorhome corner without the HD application row saying so.
When HD valving matters
Use Heavy Duty valving (and this catalog) when any of these are true:
- Constant payload — parcel vans, work bodies, and service trucks that run loaded five days a week
- Higher GVWR / chassis-cab — cutaways and stripped chassis where the OEM damper is already a commercial unit
- RV / motorhome — long wheelbases, high center of gravity, and continuous weight that cook passenger twin-tubes
- Fleet replacement policy — shops that standardize on Gabriel FleetLine / HD lines for warranty and stocking consistency
- Heat & fade complaints — a consumer damper that worked when the truck was empty but fades on grades when loaded
If the customer only tows a boat twice a summer on a half-ton, the 2018 book’s hydraulic or air-shock row is usually the right shelf. Upselling HD on every pickup is lazy cataloging—and it will not fit half the mounts anyway.
How to read an HD application row
Same left-to-right grammar as other Gabriel / KYB sheets:
- Year / chassis range — confirm the chassis code or GVWR note, not just the badge name
- Position — Front / Rear; some coaches list axle positions more carefully than passenger sheets
- HD part number / line — the commercial SKU; do not substitute a 2018 street number because the digits “look close”
- Qty & notes — mounting style, bushing size, and exclusions
Cross-check ride-control alternatives in the KYB Shocks and Struts Catalog when the vehicle is a light truck that KYB also covers—but for true commercial / RV chassis, stay in Gabriel HD (or the OEM commercial book) rather than forcing a passenger KYB Excel-G into a cutaway.
